Chapter Eleven

I was groggy the next morning. My head was pounding as I tried to remember where I was without opening my eyes, but the events of the early morning slowly came back to me as the headache relented somewhat. I had woken up as James got ready for school, but I stayed curled up in bed, watching as he got ready, making sure he had everything.

Before he left he leaned down and kissed me softly, promising he’d take care of everything and be back soon. I nodded, kissing his cheek before he pulled away. His skin was still warm and soft from his shower, smelling like his favorite soap.

I had tried to go back to sleep, I really had, but to no avail. I just couldn’t help but feel terribly lonely with James no longer next to me.

Finally, I dragged myself out of bed, padding softly downstairs. Esmé was busy in the kitchen packing lunches while Kaedin and Lila chattered and ate cereal at the table. Esmé turned to me, smiling brightly.

“Good morning, love,” she said, feeling my forehead with the inside of her wrist. “No more fever, good,” she noted. “Are you hungry, dear?”

I shook my head. “Not really.” My stomach turned at the mention of food.

Before Esmé could respond, Lila called “Mama! Kaedin messed up my braid!” There were tears in her bright blue eyes; one of her matching red braids had had the hair tie pulled from it, and the bottom half had unraveled. Kaedin looked down guiltily as his ears burned bright red, just as James’ did when he was embarrassed. Esmé gave him a sharp look as her quick fingers began to fix the braid, weaving the hair back into place. In seconds, it hung next to the other as if nothing had happened.

“Come on you two, we’re running late. Rinse your dishes and get your stuff. Now you,” she turned to me, “sit. And off with the shirt.”

This was becoming less awkward as I pulled my shirt off, sitting in Kaedin’s abandoned chair. Esmé quickly removed the bandage from my shoulder. She lightly smeared cream over the stitches and taped a fresh bandage over the whole mess.

“All better,” she said pleasantly. “That’s healing very nicely already.” She turned back to the counter, disposing of the soiled bandage and washing her hands before dropping two pieces of bread into the toaster as I pulled my shirt back on.

The toaster popped at the same time Lila and Kaedin came running back into the room, shoes on and backpacks in place.

“We’ve got to get going,” Esmé said, placing a small plate with two pieces of toast and two white pills on it in front of me with a glass of water. “Those will make you sleep and help with the pain. Gale will come by to check on you in a few hours. James will be home before us, but if you need anything, you know my number at the school,” Esmé was the nurse at the elementary school Kaedin and Lila attended.
